Thank you M'am

Why does Mrs. Jones give Roger money for the blue suede shoes?

  1. I think that Mrs.Jones gives Roger money because she once as a child who wanted stuff she could not get. She also has done stuff that she wishes God does not know . She gives him money so he can get shoes and she was really nice to him and gave him food, water, cash, and she opens herself up to him. Roger thinks she will say, "but I didn't snatch peoples pocketbooks" after the long pause. She watches him like a hawk from the corner of the room, because she wants to test his trust worthiness enough to get money.

    2. I think that that was a good answer I would agree to all of that and add I little more details I agree because they did exactly that and also had some other details to like she might have felt bad for him and that's why she wanted to take care of him and give him money for the shoes.

  2. That was a very interesting question. That is that same question I had. I think Mrs. Jones gives Roger money for the blue suede shoes because he was homeless or had no money because he had a dirty face and tried to steal her money and that's why I thought he stole her money too. I think Mrs. Jones felt bad for him because she thought he was homeless so she gave him the money. I also think she wanted to teach him a lesson because in the book she says, "I was young once and I wanted things I could not get." In the beginning she says, "You ought to be my son and I will teach you right from wrong." I also think that she bought him those shoes and took care of him because he looked like he had not eaten in a while or doesn't eat much since he was so skinny because in the story it says he looked fourteen or fifteen but very frail and willow-wild.

  3. I think Mrs. Jones gave Roger money because she does not want him to grow up to be a criminal kinda of like she was because she said, "You thought I was going to say but I didn't snatch people's pocketbooks." and to get him healthier and clean because she said, "Go to the sink and wash your face." I think that also she felt sorry for him so she gave him some food.

    1. That is a good answer I had pretty much the same answer except I explained it as a longer version. I think that you could add a little more detail next time.

  4. Mrs.Jones takes cares for Roger because he was homeless, honest, and responsible for his actions. He said "no'm, I don't got any one home.". He is honest when she asks whether he will run if he will run if she turns him loose. he doesn't make a dash for the exit after washing his face.

  6. Mrs. jones gave roger 10 dollars to buy suede shoes because Mrs. Jones can trust him and thinks he learned his lesson.
Pg. 9 and 10 Then she reached down, picked the boy up his shirt front, and shook him until his teeth rattled”.
This shows that she is treating him like he did something bad so that he learns his lesson
Pg. 10 “after that the woman said, ‘pick up my pocket book boy and give it here’”.
This shows that she can kind of trust him because she told him to pick up her pocket book and sine she made him pick it up he is also learning his lesson that what he did was bad
Pg.11 “I would teach you right from wrong”.
This proves that he is learning his lesson because she said I will teach you right from wrong
Pg.12 “well, you didn’t have to snatch my pocketbook to get some suede shoes said Mrs. Luella bates Washington jones you could have asked me.
Again he is learning that what he did was bad because he should have just asked her and since she said that that is probably another reason why she was giving him ten dollars for suede shoes
Pg.13 “he did not trust the woman not to trust him”.
This proves she can trust him now that he has learned his lesson because it even says that she trusts him now
Pg.14 “”do you need somebody to go to the store asked the boy maybe to get some milk or something don’t believe I do said the woman unless you just want sweet milk yourself.
She would trust him to go to the store and he is doing her a favor because he knows he did something wrong because of how the lady treats him
Pg.14”’ I hope you will behave yourself,” said the woman”
She said that because she is pretty sure she can trust him but not posible

  7. Mrs. Jones gave Roger the money because she is crazy.

Pg. 10 “Your face is dirty. I got a great mind to wash your face for you. Ain’t you got nobody home to tell you to wash your face?”
    Mrs. Jones hardly knows Roger.

Pg. 11”You ought to be my son. I would teach you right from wrong.”
If he was her son he would be perfect.

Pg. 12 “Not with that face, I would take you nowhere. Maybe you ain’t been to your supper either, late as it be. I believe your hungry- or been hungry- to try to snatch my pocketbook!”
She thinks that if your dirty you can’t go anywhere.

Pg. 13 “You thought I was going to say but, didn’t you? You thought I was going to say, but I didn’t snatch people’s pocketbooks. Well, I wasn’t going to say that.”
She thought he was thinking she was going to say but.

Pg. 14 “Nowhere, take this ten dollars and buy some blue suede shoes.”
She is crazy because she gave Roger the money.

  8. Mrs. Jones gave him other things and the boy didn’t steal them. She must have somewhat trusted him by then.
Pg. 11 “When she got to her door, she dragged the boy inside.” This shows that she takes him to her house. She was nice taking Roger into her house, but I think it was a risk. Pg. 13 “He could make a dash for it down the hall. He could run, run, run!” The boy didn’t run so he can be trusted a little bit more. She was giving him food too. I wouldn’t give a stranger food. Pg. 14 “Do you need somebody to go to the store?” Roger was trying to be nice to Mrs. Jones. I think that makes Roger a little more trustworthy.

    1. I disagree about that last part because what if he uses the money to buy the blue suede shoes and then take off?

  9. Mrs. Jones was determined to teach Roger a lesson.
Pg.9 “The large woman simply turned around and kicked him right square in his blue-jean sitter.”
This is a good way to teach someone a lesson because, he tried to steal ‘’Her pocketbook.’’ And that is usually what someone would do if they tried to snatch “Your Pocketbook’’
Pg.11 “Mrs. Jones stopped, jerked him around in front of her, and put half a nelson about his neck”
I think Mrs. Jones did that so he couldn’t get away and go do it to somebody else and so he’d be like “I should’ve not try to steal her pocketbook’’.
Pg. 14 “And next time, do not make the mistake latching onto my pocketbook nor anybody else’s”
I think that she said that to him, because she does’nt want him to do it again , and she kind of is like warning him that if he does it again there will be consequences to his actions.
Pg.14 “And from now on in son I hope you behave yourself”
She said that because she believes in him not to do it again.

  10. Mrs. Jones gave Roger money because the woman relates to Roger.
(pg. 12) Roger says” You going to take me to jail?” The woman says” not with that face.” So Roger is not going to jail. Why? Mrs. Jones could think roger needs a better home than a jail. She might even think Roger does not even have a home. That is what came to my mind when I read the story. Mrs. Jones might want to take care of this boy. But she might not have time. Mabey Mrs. Jones’s family never had time or money for her so she gave him money for blue suede shoes.
(pg. 13)Mrs. Jones said, “I were young once and I wanted things I could not get also.” She has done some bad thing in her life, but doesn’t everyone, like Mrs. Jones said (pg.13) “ I have done things, too, which I would not tell you, son-neither God if he didn’t already know. Everybody’s got something in common.” That something in “common” is we all do things bad sometimes. Roger’s bad thing that he did was try to snatch a pocket book. Mrs. Jones could of stoll from a gas station, cheat on a question in school. Who knows? But after this experience Roger probably learned his leason.

  11. Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones feels great empathy for Roger
Pg.10 “I got a great mind to wash your face for you.”
She is taking care of him by washing his face and is helping him. So he doesn’t look like he just face planted into a pile of dirt and so he looks nice and doesn’t get every thing dirty.
Pg. 10 “You ought to be my son. I would teach you right from wrong.”
She is teaching Roger right from wrong so he doesn’t make more mistakes. She doesn’t want Roger to be like her when she was a kid and wants him to feel good about himself.
Pg. 12 “Then we’ll eat. I believe you’re hungry or have been hungry to try and snatch my pocketbook!”
She is feeding Roger so he won’t starve to death. He might just be scared that she will do something to him or he jus want to get out of there because he doesn’t know what is going to happen.
Pg.14 “Now here, take this 10 dallars and go buy yourself some blue suede shoes.
She is giving him the money to buy the suede shoes because the whole time he was at Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones’ house he made the right choices and he did not run away.
Pg.14 “But from here on in, son, I hope you behave yourself.”
She wants him to behave himself so he doesn’t get in any more trouble like she did when she was a kid, but maybe didn’t steal peoples pocketbook. She just doesn’t want Roger to make the same mistake she did.
Pg. 14 “She led him down the hall to the front door and opened it. “Good night! Behave yourself, boy!”
She led him down the hall so he wouldn’t get lost or hurt so he could get home safely. If he went down the hall by himself he could have stole from other people or could have gotten kidnapped.
