The No-Guitar Blues

Why does Fausto put the twenty-dollar bill in the church's collection basket rather than use it to buy a guitar?

  1. Fausto put the $20 in the offering plate because if he didn’t he knew that he would have a guilty conscience for the rest of his life. Fausto (pg.10) “felt bad about lying.” He knew that getting the $20 dollar bill from the people was unfair (pg.12). When in church on Sunday Fausto felt that when Father Jerry said “we are all sinners” that he was starring right at Fausto. The guilt was sinking in. He also started pretending that he didn’t care that he cheated the $20 dollars out of them (pg. 13) saying “I can probably get a guitar for twenty. Maybe at a yard sale-things are cheaper.” Fausto even fidgeted with guilt (pg. 14)! He obviously felt that If he didn’t put the $20 bill in the offering basket, things wouldn’t be right. And after church, he even felt better. So Fausto felt really bad about taking the $20 bill, so he put it in the offering basket, and he felt better.

  2. Fausto put the $20 bill in the offering plate because when he lied about Roger (the dog) he wanted to get away from the 20 dollar bill he received (forcefully) as a reward for finding him. He had said “I can’t take that.”(12) (the 20 dollar bill) it is also said in the story “Fausto caught his mind wandering and tried to concentrate on his sins” (pg.14). He felt bad about the money he scammed out of them. He couldn’t give the money back because he wanted a guitar so bad. He finally felt so guilty that he wanted to get away from the money. “He struck a hand reluctantly in his pocket and pulled out the 20 dollar bill.” He wanted to give the 20 dollar bill that he didn’t deserve away. pg. 14. He is truthful but he can still lie when it comes to guitars.

  3. Fausto puts the $20 in the basket because he felt bad for lying and that he felt he didn’t deserve the $20.And that he was a good person that knew he shouldn’t deceive. Fausto is even questioning himself as you can see here, “How could he have been so deceitful” pg.12. Fausto also even tried to stop the people from trying to give him the money like right here, pg.12 “I can’t take that” and “No I don’t”. When Fausto left the nice people’s house and took the $20 out of his pocket he wished that he hadn’t lied, like right here on pg.13 “Oh I shouldn’t have lied.” and this is his feelings for lying “But he felt bad.” And these are the reasons that he put the $20 in the basket.

    1. I agree, but I think that he didn't get the 20$ bill "forcefully".

  4. Fausto put the $20 in the basket because he felt guilty. He felt guilty because he brought the dog back to the owners and got a reward but he lied about it. “How could I have been so deceitful?”(pg 12)
So instead of getting a new guitar, he put it in the offering basket so it could go to someone who needs it more (my opinion). “But he felt bad”. “Fausto fidgeted with guilt. Could he know? I only did it yesterday.” I think it was a good idea that he had put the $20 in the basket rather than buying a guitar, because it could go to someone who needs it more.

  5. Why does Fausto put the $20 in the offering plate rather than buying a guitar?
My answer; He was a humble person.
Pg. 8, “Mom,” he said, “I want a guitar for Christmas.” He kept trying, but “He knew his mother was right.” A guitar cost too much, so they couldn’t afford to buy a guitar, and he was fine with that. He tried to work for money instead of using someone else’s money.
Pg. 9 “Fausto tossed him a slice of orange, and the dog snapped it up and licked his lips.” Then, “Fausto laughed at his joke and offered the dog another slice.” He gave the dog pieces of his earned orange. He didn’t even think before giving the dog pieces of his orange. He gave the dog orange slices when he was also hungry, he put the dog before himself.
Pg. 10 + 13, While thinking of a way to trick the owners into giving him extra money, “he felt bad about lying” to the owners. After he went to their house, he still felt bad about lying to the owners. He wanted to go to Saturday confession, but it was past 4:30 when confession ended. He wanted forgiveness for lying to someone for money.

  6. i think that fausto did that because "fausto felt better after church.",and it made him feel not so guilty over not telling the truth.I got this info from the paragraph after he went to church.

  7. He felt bad that he lied. The next morning he went to church and the priest was talking about sinners. So then he felt bad about what he did. I got this information from multiple paragraphs.
